Democracy sounds like a wonderful thing, but is it really democracy when a couple of populated area’s get to decide the ruling party, its sitting president and the future decisions of the country. This means the exclusion of minorities, groups, smaller towns, states or region from having an equal say in decision making by government. The electoral college in America address this problem by giving every area and group of people an equal voice. South African democracy is setup to win elections by popular vote which gives densely populated areas the power of choosing the ruling party, government policies and the president. One person one vote sound good in theory, but is it really democratic to have but a small group decide everything for the country. The electoral college forces candidates to campaign outside the dens populated areas, giving equal opportunity for communities to discuss policies, concerns and future legislation that affects the whole country. This gives a voice to smaller towns or minority groups which tends to live near each other. Birds of a feather flock together like they say, diversity is not really a strength as politicians would like you to believe. Communities yes, but the unfortunate thing is that the majority of communities are not that diverse and rather made up of or determined by race, religion, politics, income and culture. Good examples of this is the Hollywood, Chinese, Amish, Italians, Irish and Native Americans. People would like to think this collectivism is created by racism, but it’s not as easy or clear cut as this. There are many factors that build a community and not having the same believe system causes friction between community members, usually because of one group trying to enforce their ways of living onto others. So getting back to democracy, its achieved by the popular vote system and how best to get votes, promise free stuff. If the person gets into power they need to make good on their promises. The thing is that money doesn’t grow on threes and people are inherently greedy, rich or poor. Everyone always wants more, but you can only spend so much of other peoples money, before the fountain dries up. Each election more promises needs to be made. This leads to socialism and when governments cant deliver they start adopting communism by nationalizing businesses which eventually eradicates capitalism. Government companies only deal with government companies, major corruption by people in high places, lack of delivery because there’s no incentive, but its great everyone gets paid the same except the government leaders. Productivity goes down and so does food supply and other big sectors which were successful under capitalism. How do I know this you might ask. Well I’m a South African who has been watching this happen in my country over the past 25 years of democracy. The majority of government owned and managed business or entities are bankrupt. Year after year we need to do bailouts. Huge pieces of farmland belongs to the state and is only leased to aspiring black farmers. The majority of these farms end up laying unused due to funding problems or mismanagement by the aspiring farmers. So ask yourself does democracy really have the peoples best interest at hart. Is democracy inevitably going to change in to a communist dictatorship and how many people will die before people realize communism is bad.
