Title: “Despina Mirou: A High-IQ Astronomer, Brilliant Actress, and Scientist”

Alongside her successful career in Hollywood, Despina Mirou managed not only to study but also to earn awards and excel in astronomy. Originally from Soufli, Thrace, she arrived alone in America in 2015 without knowing English, carrying only her dream of succeeding in the “Mecca” of cinema. Since then, she has built an impressive career, with 17 films and 96 awards, excelling in acting, stand-up comedy, writing, and astronomy.

Her love for stars, planets, and the mysteries of the universe — including cosmology and black holes — led her in 2017 to pursue academic studies. While working on major productions, she successfully passed an algebra entrance examination required for admission. After excelling in the exam, she began her coursework. The talented actress first studied planetary astronomy with laboratories and observatory studies under Professor Michael Schwartz.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to my astronomy professors, especially Michael Schwartz, Simon Balm, and James Plaxco from the National Space Society,” Despina says emotionally.

After completing her astronomy studies with honors, she received a significant scholarship to S.U. University. In 2021, she continued her studies, focusing on SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), exoplanets, and the possibility of life on Mars.

In June 2019, the international comedian — having already received honorary recognition connected to NASA initiatives — earned an additional distinction titled “International Astronomical Search Collaboration” from the University of Hawaii’s Institute for Astronomy for her studies of near-Earth asteroids.

She later became an official research member of the National Astronomy Society (Washington, D.C., USA). In December 2020, the National Space Society appointed her as a research member. She is actively involved in programs associated with space research, including initiatives connected to NASA’s Artemis mission.

Despina Mirou reflects:

“From childhood, I wanted to study the cosmos. I was fascinated by questions such as: How did the universe begin? What is its structure? What came before the Big Bang? Astronomy is the oldest natural science, studying celestial objects and phenomena — planets, moons, stars, nebulae, galaxies, and comets. I am deeply in love with astronomy. It has changed my perspective on life. It is such a vast science that I will be learning forever.”

Her Studies

• Degree in Astronomy – Planetary Astronomy with Laboratories
• Degree in Astronomy – Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), Exoplanets, Life on Mars, and Life in the Universe
• Artificial Intelligence – EETN EU

“You know, an important astronomy life lesson for me was when my professor showed me a video from October 14, 2012, when astronaut Felix Baumgartner ascended more than 24 miles above Earth’s surface in a stratospheric balloon. Millions watched worldwide as he stepped off the platform and broke the speed of sound during his free fall back to Earth. Before jumping, Felix said: ‘Sometimes you have to be really high to understand how small you are.’ That deeply resonated with me,” Despina recalls.

She also quotes Eckhart Tolle:
“You’re not in the universe — you are the universe.”

Despina once declined a proposal to participate as a researcher in the Mars One project. Speaking humorously with Professor Balm, she remarked:
“It is something between suicide and a fertile life lockdown,” joking about the challenges of living on Mars.

“I am a child of the Milky Way.
The night is my mother.
I am made of the dust of stars.”

She has participated in numerous astronomical conferences worldwide, including events in Russia and the Global Space Exploration Conference. In October 2021, she traveled to Dubai for the 72nd International Astronautical Congress.

At the same time, she is completing her book, “Space-Time, Parallel Universes, and Déjà Vu,” scheduled for publication in 2026. Additional astronomy studies are expected to be published in well-known scientific forums.
