Interview with Francesca De Martini actress

Francesca De Martini, è un'attrice italiana che vive tra Roma e Londra. Nei suoi oltre trent'anni di carriera Francesca ha lavorato in oltre 50 lungometraggi, serie tv, teatro e doppiaggio diretti tra gli altri dal Premio Oscar Bernardo Bertolucci, Pupi Avati, Michele Placido, Giovanni Veronesi, Bobby Moresco, Christian Dugay, Paul Walker e Francesca Archibugi. Ha condiviso il set con Paz Vega, Sophia Loren, Franco Nero, Julia Stiles e Nicola Walker. Negli ultimi 5 anni è apparsa in diverse produzioni internazionali come Riviera 2, I Medici- Il Magnifico, Lamborghini the Movie, Christmas in Rome, The Split 3, Blood & Treasure 2. Francesca ha anche lavorato come insegnante di recitazione in alcune serie tv, allenando principalmente bambini e adolescenti. Ha inoltre dedicato oltre 10 anni all'insegnamento della recitazione in 2 delle più importanti scuole di recitazione d'Italia (Accademia Nazionale d'Arte Drammatica "Silvio D'Amico" e Scuola d'Arte Cinematografica "Gian Maria Volontè") È la madre di Jacopo Olmo Antinori.

La tua carriera è diversificata Impressionante e diversificata. Puoi raccontarci una storia su come hai iniziato nell'industria cinematografica e cosa ti ha spinto a dirigere e produrre?

Ho  sempre amato il cinema fin  da bambina, poi  quando ero al liceo mi  sono appassionata anche al teatro, così  finito il liceo sono  andata a studiare all’Accademia Nazionale d’arte Drammatica. Il primo film l’ho girato  quando ancora studiavo  in Accademia, avevo  da poco un agente che mi mandò a fare un  provino a Cinecittà … ancora mi ricordo  l’emozione di entrare nel regno del  cinema.. incontrai  una regista  donna  Vanna Paoli che invece di farmi un provino fece una lunga chiacchierata con  me  sul personaggio per il quale mi aveva chiamato … all’epoca molti registi , soprattuto i maestri  non facevano un  provino   facevano una chiacchierata con l’attore, uscii  di lì  che avevo  ottenuto il mio primo  ruolo,  dopo  poche settimane partii per il set che era al nord .   Fu un’esperienza così  totalizzante per me  che mi  ha fatto innamorare . Da allora ho sempre desiderato  continuare a lavorare nella film industry 

Francesca De Martini, is an Italian actress who lives between Rome and London. In her over thirty years of career Francesca has worked in over 50 feature films, TV series, theater and dubbing directed among others by the Oscar winner Bernardo Bertolucci, Pupi Avati, Michele Placido, Giovanni Veronesi, Bobby Moresco, Christian Dugay, Paul Walker and Francesca Archibugi. He shared the set with Paz Vega, Sophia Loren, Franco Nero, Julia Stiles and Nicola Walker. In the last 5 years she has appeared in several international productions such as Riviera 2, I Medici- Il Magnifico, Lamborghini the Movie, Christmas in Rome, The Split 3, Blood & Treasure 2. Francesca has also worked as an acting teacher in some TV series, training mainly children and adolescents. She has also dedicated over 10 years to teaching acting in 2 of the most important acting schools in Italy (National Academy of Dramatic Art "Silvio D'Amico" and School of Cinematographic Art "Gian Maria Volontè"). by Jacopo Olmo Antinori.

Your career is diverse Impressive and diverse. Can you tell us a story about how you got started in the film industry and what inspired you to direct and produce?

I have always loved cinema since I was a child, then when I was in high school I also became passionate about the theater, so after high school I went to study at the National Academy of Dramatic Art. The first film I shot when I was still studying at the Academy, I recently had an agent who sent me to audition at Cinecittà ... I still remember the thrill of entering the realm of cinema .. I met a woman director Vanna Paoli who instead to give me an audition he had a long chat with me about the character for which he had called me ... at the time many directors, especially the masters did not audition they had a chat with the actor, I got out of there that I had got my first role , after a few weeks I left for the set which was in the north. It was such an all-encompassing experience for me that it made me fall in love. Since then I have always wanted to continue working in the film industry

Hai una storia che vorresti che tutti conoscessero? Potresti condividerlo con noi?

Qualche anno fa mi resi conto che no c’erano  tanti  ruoli per attrici della mia età ( avevo superato i 48 anni ), improvvisamente facevo meno provini, e le prospettive non erano rosee . Allo stesso tempo sapevo di avere un valore come attrice ,  sapevo che avevo  ancora molto da dare . Non avevo intenzione di sedermi in un angolo e lamentarmi , così  in modo  un pò  folle forse, ho deciso di  cercarmi  un agente  in UK  visto  che parlavo un buon inglese . I miei  due figli erano ormai cresciuti  e potevo  andare a Londra per dei  periodi in cui  cercavo  di perfezionare l’inglese e di farmi conoscere . Reinventare una carriera a 50 anni  sembrava un ‘idea folle,  e ho avuto  anche  momenti complicati . Ma  ho avuto ragione  perché da allora ho  lavorato molto in progetti internazionali  sia in Uk  che in Italia . La scorsa estate l’ho passata  quasi tutta a Londra a girare una serie Tv  per la BBC che si  chiama  The Split. Il consiglio che posso dare è  di  lavorare sodo  per migliorarsi e di osare .

. Do you have a story that you would like everyone to know? Could you share it with us?

A few years ago I realized that there weren't many roles for actresses my age (I was over 48), suddenly I was doing fewer auditions, and the prospects were not rosy. At the same time I knew I had value as an actress, I knew I still had a lot to give. I wasn't going to sit in a corner and complain, so in a bit of a crazy way maybe, I decided to look for an agent in the UK as I spoke good English. My two children were now grown up and I was able to go to London for periods where I was trying to perfect my English and get known. Reinventing a career at 50 seemed like a crazy idea, and I also had some tricky moments. But I was right because since then I have worked a lot in international projects both in the UK and in Italy. Last summer I spent almost all of it in London shooting a TV series for the BBC called The Split. The advice I can give is to work hard to improve and to be daring.

Puoi parlarci del tuo film di prossima uscita  ?

La serie The Split 3  tra poco uscirà negli USA  su BBC america e  su Sundancetv ,   inoltre il 6 luglio  su Paramount +  uscirà la serie Blood and Treasure  2 dove interpreto una  suora un pò speciale .  Presto  uscirà su Netflix  una serie dal titolo  “ Lidia Poet” , un progetto  molto  interessante sulla prima donna avvocato  italiana e al cinema uscirà Il Colibrì  per la regia di Francesca Archibugi 

Puoi dirci chi o cosa ti ispira come attrice?

sono  molte le persone che  mi ispirano, soprattutto  donne. Non ce n’è una in particolare e non necessariamente una donna conosciuta . Ho intorno  a me  svariate persone che nella loro lotta nella  vita quotidiana  mi ispirano . La mia attrice italiana preferita  è e sarà sempre Monica Vitti 

Can you tell us who or what inspires you as an actress?

there are many people who inspire me, especially women. There is not one in particular and not necessarily a known woman. I have around me several people who inspire me in their struggle in daily life. My favorite Italian actress is and always will be Monica Vitti

Puoi raccontare una storia sugli altri tuoi lavori?

Anni fa ho avuto l’onore e il piacere di lavorare con SophiaLoren . Una donna straordinaria e una grande professionista. Il primo giorni  di lavorazione io ero  emozionantissima, stare accanto ad un icona del cinema italiano… in  più interpretavo un personaggio di una donna che lei aveva davvero conosciuto  nella sua vita, quindi  ero un pò  preoccupata .. facemmo una prova e alla fine lei  mi abbracciò  e mi disse : la signora Lina era proprio  così ..

Can you tell a story about your other works?

Years ago I had the honor and pleasure of working with Sophia Loren. An extraordinary woman and a great professional. The first day of work I was very emotional, being next to an icon of Italian cinema ... plus I was playing a character of a woman that she had really known in her life, so I was a little worried .. we did a test and in the end she made me she hugged me and said: Ms. Lina was just like that ..

Chi sono alcune persone nell'industria cinematografica con cui ti piacerebbe lavorare un giorno?

Oh si molte ! Martin Scorsese, Marco Bellocchio Matteo Garrone , Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola,  come registi  e mi piacerebbe lavorare ancora con Francesca Archibugi e con Letizia Lamartire  con cui mi sono trovata benissimo 

Come attori/ attrici  adoro Kate Winslet, Juliette Binoche, Julianne Moore,  Kristen Dunst, Olivia Colman … e molte molte altre

Che consiglio daresti alle aspiranti attrici?

Il nostro  è un lavoro  molto particolare ,  consiglio  di studiare  tanto per essere davvero  delle attrici  con  un  grande spessore, e di  coltivare uno spirito  aperto e positivo . 

Il nostro lavoro è  molto  duro  a volte,  si ricevono tanti NO , bisogna metterli in conto  e avere la forza di andare avanti 

Un'ultima domanda. Quale domanda vorresti che ti avessi fatto? E quale sarebbe la

risposta?

Tu insegni  anche  recitazione come hai iniziato e quale pensi sia il modo  giusto  di insegnare quest’arte ? 

io non avevo mai pensato di insegnare, non l’ho cercato anzi pensavo di no saperlo  fare. Poi  sono successe una serie di cose per cui mi sono accorta che non solo lo sapevo  fare ma che mi piaceva . Ho un istinto  fortissimo nell’insegnamento quando mi trovo davanti a un giovane attore  improvvisamente  capisco  di cosa ha bisogno, su cosa deve lavorare, come e cosa  bisogna dirgli  per aiutarlo ad evolvere,  a volte mi stupisco  io di me stessa, e a fine lezione mi chiedo  da dove mi sia arrivato  quel  consiglio  o quell’indicazione che ho dato  all allievo …. è come se  è il mio istinto  che parla e ci azzecca sempre ! Io credo  che un insegnante di recitazione aiuti  il talento ad emergere e a svilupparsi ed ogni attore è un mondo a sé  che va rispettato  e incoraggiato,  troppo spesso  ci  sono insegnanti che  usano  metodi  brutali  o molto  duri  per insegnare agli attori , io non sono  d’accordo   su questa modalità , lìattore è un essere fragile  e il talento  ha bisogno  di amore per emergere.

One last question. What question do you wish I had asked you? And what would the

answer be?

Do you also teach acting as you started and what do you think is the right way to teach this art? 

I had never thought of teaching, I did not seek it in fact I thought I did not know how to do it. Then a series of things happened that made me realize that I not only knew how to do it but that I liked it. I have a very strong instinct in teaching when I find myself in front of a young actor suddenly I understand what he needs, what he has to work on, how and what needs to be told to help him evolve, sometimes I am amazed at myself, and at the end of the lesson I I ask where that advice or indication that I gave to the student came from…. it is as if it is my instinct that speaks and always gets it right! I believe that an acting teacher helps talent emerge and develop and each actor is a world of his own that must be respected and encouraged, too often there are teachers who use brutal or very hard methods to teach actors, I am not from agreement on this modality, the actor is a fragile being and the talent needs love to emerge.
