Being familiar with comic book sales, it would be ridiculous not to talk about this book. This book is pretty much the cornerstone of any comic book store. This book puts the Graphic in Graphic novel. This is Watchmen. Now, if you went ahead and watched the 2009 film, you’ve already done yourself a disservice. I’ve been known for my rants about the movie well before it came out. My biggest Criticism was that the actual story would never be able to be confined to a single film. This would have to be a trilogy to do this story justice. Why?
This book was jam-packed in the 12 issues when it was released in 1985. I think one very crucial aspect of this series is the additional information throughout the issues. News articles and Magazine ads are scattered about to add context to the story and to help flesh out the world of Watchmen. This method is way better than exposition. You become part of the world like the characters of the comic. You get a chance to form opinions of the world they are navigating. This aspect of the storytelling is honestly the only way you can make any sense of the ending. So, the movie had to change the ending. This is understandable. I’m not saying the movie is bad in any sense of the word, but some aspects of the character's motivation are confusing without the additional context.
So, Do yourself a favor and read the book before seeing the movie. If you’ve already seen the movie, read the book anyway. It is truly an experience you need in your life.
TRIGGER WARNING: If you are sensitive to violence or have any form of anxiety disorder, I do not recommend reading this book. This story is very emotional. Not appropriate for young children.
