So today I found Minds.
Straight away I saw it has most of the key features we go to the social media giants for on an individual basis. From posting statuses, messaging, sharing of images and video, blogging, meeting new people, joining like-minded groups and even generating revenue, I realised instantly that this could be a giant killer. It has almost everything we go to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube & Medium for, and can even act as a replacement for sites like Patreon, all with the added plus that it is an open free platform, a throwback to a time of internet before hardcore censorship.
With this I truly believe Minds has the ability to mop up the entire social media market with it's open approach and all-in-one capabilities, it just needs a few added abilities to truly be the internet's Social Media Swiss army knife. For instance, I work in the events industry and I would love to be able to get my brands listed on here akin to a Facebook "Page" and upload full photo albums from individual nights and get people to tag themselves in photos. Maybe this can be factored into the 'Groups' section of Minds further down the line...
However for me the largest factor that needs to change is that on the outside, in the world of "free speech", this is often regarded as a 'right-wing' term; something the "Alt-Right" would shout about, and this for me may keep people who would see themselves as liberal-left, left-wing, SJW or whatever title they want to give themselves away from the service. I see minds as a place for everyone. The left needs to see this as a platform for them to make a home and start their own groups; much like Reddit has many different viewpoints living on it's servers.
That being said Minds is still in it's infancy, and as users lose trust in Facebook, Twitter and YouTube over political standpoints and censorship, and as they and Instagram force the average user and small businesses away from their platforms through harsh algorithms, those sites will continue to fade, adults will look for a platform they can trust and the children of tomorrow will want to take advantage of the all-in-one nature and the immediacy of the platform, businesses will in turn want to be where the people are, and as long as Minds sticks to it's ethos of freedom and transparency we could see it become the dominating force in the social Media world. We just need to get both sides of the political spectrum on board first.
