Joining Minds: First Week in Retrospective

Other members on the network recommend that I broaden the content on my channel to attract an audience. So, I thought it might be fun to share my first week experiences on Minds.

August 24, 2018

I join and instantly I'm flooded with subscribers before I even make any content. I notice a substantial amount of members are from Vietnam. Though I'm half-Vietnamese, I can't speak more than three words of the language. But I'm suspicious many are bots. A couple of hours later I realize the majority are pretty girls who are probably not Vietnamese, but Chinese or Korean. (I don't many Vietnamese women who look like that who didn't have surgery first.) Should I hide the fact I'm half-Vietnamese? I don't want to be confused for a bot!

I publish two blogs: a Channel Introduction and my first Project Update Journal for my first Low-to-No-Budget Indie Film: 'Metamorphosis, Interrupted'.

But instead of getting to the Final Outline deliverable for the Screenplay Phase of the project, I continue browsing minds, baffled by the amount of subscribers and engagement between members.

August 25, 2018

Log on and so many notifications! A deluge of subscribers and though I'm now confident a good deal are bots I realize I'm missing out on tokens. But my smart phone is broken! Well, not entirely broken but the screen is so messed up that if I turn it on it starts accessing information without me! I need a screen replacement... Oh, but those sweet, sweet tokens!

August 26, 2018

I finally give in and attempt to use my number. But Minds text me a security token! I turn on my phone and barely get the code before my phone can call an ex-girlfriend or something. Though I'm now on Minds it takes me some time to figure out how to set up my Crypto account. I'm all thumbs with this and for all I know hackers now have my goodies. But it looks like it's working!

I decide to publish a Lessons Corner early, just to see how its effects my token harvest. It's a slow trickle but I'm cool with that. So far, I've gotten more views here than on YouTube, Facebook, or any other internet platform. I think I'm on Minds for good.

My first day's earnings is nearly 9 tokens, including that limited time bonus! How much are tokens worth? Apparently, not much. But they all belong to me and that's what really counts!

Note: according to @MsCYPRAH in this article, one (1) Minds Token is equal to 0.0005 ETH. As of today, one (1) ETH is worth $297.94 (01 SEP 2018, 10:43 AM PST). That means as of this timestamp, one (1) Minds Token is worth 14.897 cents!

August 27, 2018

Not as many subscribers as the first few days. Do the bots no longer love me? Minds member @be_st hypothesizes that since Minds requires phone numbers, there are only so many free numbers out there for the bots to use. Oh, well. So much for free tokens.

I decide to experiment with Boost, thinking it will only promote my latest blog. But it appears it boosts the entire channel. Not what I wanted, but it seems to be working. Not by much, but then again there may not be a huge audience for my channel.

By the end of the day I earn close to 7 tokens in all. Pretty happy. Will this be a regular thing? I sure hope so.

August 28, 2018

Bot subscribers are pestering me in small increments now. I guess the golden age of free tokens is over. But today (Tuesday) is my official Lessons Corner day. I publish an article about how I encountered the Trolley Problem in my first screenplay. I figure this is going to be a hit! Nope. What am I doing wrong?

I earn barely 2 tokens altogether, but part of that is the 'limited time bonus'. I figure this will be the norm now.

August 29, 2018

Though I make it a regular habit to interact with others, I spend a good portion of this day commenting and hanging out. It appears this influences the token harvest quite a bit.

By the end of the day I earn close to 3 tokens. That's a whole 44.691 cents! Momma, I'm making it big!

August 30, 2018

Even with a Boost my content isn't making waves. However, it's far more than I ever got elsewhere. I decide to browse around Minds to consult the experiences of others.

I learn about hashtags from an article by @AnonFPV. Talk to some people in the thread about hashtags and they offer other advice. I then edit my articles to include them; instant results, even though they are just a few more views, the rate of views is increasing! I'm extremely grateful.

Then @Rushofwaves offers some advice, as well as sharing that being mentioned on his channel produces those sweet, sweet views. @AnonFPV chimes in sharing that it helped him when his channel started. No idea if these are the same people but I've got a treasure chest of tokens and willing to experiment. 5 tokens to @Rushofwaves. That's nearly 75 cents! Within a couple of hours I have more views than subscribers. Are these organic? It seems so. He also messages me, giving me additional advice about groups which turn out to be very helpful. Mad props to both @Rushofwaves and @AnonFPV.

They and many others also recommend broadening the content on my channel beyond self-promotion. I didn't realize that was what I was doing, but I decide to take their recommendation and reconsider my approach.

Earned close to 3 tokens by the end of the day.

August 31, 2018

Couldn't get on Minds until the end of the day since I was working. But I check my channel and now it's over 600 views, with my Channel Introduction getting over half of that. To many of you this may not seem like much, but this is incredible for me. Thanks again to @Rushofwaves and the rest of the Minds community for the advice. I think I have a future here!

Earned almost 2 tokens this day, but that's understandable. The bots have ran out of phone numbers and any token harvest is now dependent on my engagement with the community and their interest in my content.
