For most of us. We can't have everything so we have to compromise. And one of the lessons I learned early in life is that the grass is usually not greener on the other side.
The very first thing you have to do in compromising is to identify what is important to you. You are extremely lucky if you can have that important thing without giving up too much and/or too many other things.
What started me thinking about this?
My wife and I have been thinking about this for some time. Should we stay in California or move elsewhere?
The most important thing in our lives is our immediate family - our children and their families. Sure, we can see them once in a while living elsewhere. But it is not the same as seeing them very often. We all live close to each other. The only way we would move elsewhere is to take everyone with us.
My children are very fortunate in that they are close to other people they grew up. They are very close to their childhood friends and they are all in the same situation - raising children of their own. In short, they are solidly anchored here in California.
Sure, California has its problems. But so does other places. We all love where we live.
And we are very fortunate that we have the option to stay.
So, we are not leaving California.
