When gorilla Anaka celebrated her 6th birthday on August 30, Zoo Atlanta posted pictures on Facebook to mark the occasion and fans responded with messages of best wishes and congratulations.

One photo, a close up of Anaka’s fingers surprised many of her well-wishers who noticed the pink patch on her skin and how similar her fingers were to a human’s. Of course, gorillas have opposable thumbs, as do humans. Primates also have individual finger and toe-prints, sometimes also used for identification. Similar to humans, primates also have nails, rather than claws, and use them for opening and scraping things as well as for cleaning and scratching.

According to Zoo Atlanta, Anaka’s skin is as unique as her personality, confirming this on their website saying: ‘’ often barking at her mom and others to get a prime spot for food and juice,’’ and ‘’She is often seen riding piggyback on her brother and sisters.”

‘Well, her skin pigment has always been like that and hasn’t changed over the years, so we think it’s just a cool birthmark,’” the publication cited a spokesperson from the zoo saying.
