Is Our Society Headed For a Collapse Like the Roman Empire?

Sometimes we may fail to see the most obvious of things that are present before our eyes. The end is nigh and if you feel that the notion that our current society is headed towards destruction like the roman empire, is being paranoid… think again.

Time For A Reality Check

In what is eerily similar to the former roman empire, the lines dividing politics and entertainment have dissolved. In the mixed baggage of chaos that we now perceive as modern life, we cannot but have a sense of foreboding that the modern society is disintegrating and is headed for a fall.

The things that we share in common with the empire is overwhelmingly similar. Morals out of a bacchanalia? Check. Abuse of public office for private purposes? Check. Bread (welfare) and circuses (reality TV) for the masses? Check. Oh the times, oh the customs! Where is Cicero when we need him?

Here’s what a study funded by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and headed by the National Science Foundation’s Safa Motesharrei had to say about our society’s fate:

“Two important features seem to appear across societies that have collapsed,” reads the study. “The stretching of resources due to the strain placed on the ecological carrying capacity and the economic stratification of society into Elites and Masses.” In unequal societies, researchers said, “collapse is difficult to avoid…. Elites grow and consume too much, resulting in a famine among Commoners that eventually causes the collapse of society.” As limited resources plague the working class, the wealthy, insulated from the problem, “continue consuming unequally” and exacerbate the issue, the study said. For those who think modern society is immune from the problems that brought down ancient civilizations, a “brief overview of collapses demonstrates not only the ubiquity of the phenomenon, but also the extent to which advanced, complex and powerful societies are susceptible to collapse,” the study said.

The similarity does not end there. The cultural aspect of these two great civilizations cannot be ignored. Just like Rome in its later half, the modern society embodies and works on the politics of transmigration and translation. The steady and unflinching rise if the internet has completely changed the way we communicate with each other and this has led to a drastic change in our lifestyle. This change is strangely reminiscent of the Greek influence on the Roman empire. There is however no way to counter or nullify the said cultural influences from taking effect. The paradox of liberalism and the rise of “debate culture” has ensured that we are unable to take prompt decisions because all we are doing is debate on the possible consequences. The actions of the past are the lessons for the future and we can no longer ignore the overture that history exerts. The only path that we can follow to ensure a harmonious future is through sustainable development and increased equality. La Dolce Vita anyone?
