This list is by far not complete, but these are the dumbest I've had thrown at me recently.
You can't be deaf because deafness is a feminist ideology. If you're not a feminist you can't be deaf, simple as that. Ok, this argument comes from the bad SJW type that can't realize that not everything is freaking political. Some things are based solely on objective facts, facts like there are only two genders with the exception of some transhumanists that want to be both genders or Intersex but those are actually quite rare, even just as rare people who are genetically intersex due to a genetic deformity.
Deafness is literally a scientific, objective fact. You either hear little to nothing, or you're hearing. No ideology involved here. Now granted there are deaf people who are feminists and I consider a few of them to be friends of mine. Just because a lot of deaf people consider themselves feminists doesn't mean being deaf makes you a feminist, even though sometimes it does seem like being a feminist does make you deaf .. and coincidentally dumb as well.
Next argument is "You can't be deaf because you wear headphones. Deaf people don't wear headphones." Really meow? Rikki Poynter is deaf and she wears headphones. She explains it rather well in a recent video of hers which I'll have linked in the description below for your listening pleasure. I love being able to hear what I can, as do other deaf people with residual hearing. Sometimes, I like to wear headphones in public because it gets people to leave me the hell alone instead of talking to me from behind and expecting a reply only to get pissed off that I don't respond, the hearing aids don't always give away the "oh he may be deaf" bit to some people.
Every time I see this stupid argument I always want to turn it back on the blind and say something like "Yeah blind people don't need protection from the sun, blind people don't wear shades, fake blind people man I swear. Feel free to call out Ray Charles at your leisure."
And there's the argument of "You can't be deaf, you're just too young." This is the one I typically get instead of the "But you're so pretty" bit females get. I hate having to explain about inheritable deafness by genetics. It's a genetic trait, but when two people who are in love very much with each other have this ressessive gene and get together and have kids, you're going to end up with some deaf children. Here are the people in my immediate family that are either moderate to severe hard of hearing to deaf. My mother, my father, both sets of grandparents, my two brothers, my sister, 5 of my uncles, 3 of my aunts, vast majority of my cousins. And the sign language my family uses primarily? Signed Exact English and International. ISL is used for children and SEE is used among adults. Amazing shit right?
Seriously though, this argument is like saying "You can't be disabled, you're too young" which does happen a lot in that phrasing too and I'm like "yeah, which is why we send young men into war because we all know young men are immune to all poisons and completely impervious to damage with their +20 defence of youth equipped. Young soldiers routinely stand on land mines and exploding IED's laughing maniacally because they simply cannot be damaged." That sounds stupid right? Because that's how retarded the "but you're too young" argument is.
And finally "You're not really deaf because you don't use ASL". I've had this a couple times myself, but not nearly as much as someone that's more known than I am. Deaf YouTuber Jessica Kellgren-Fozard gets this a hell of a lot, as well as other better known deaf people in the UK. In the UK they use BSL, and for some stupid reason American deafs believe that all deaf people use ASL or American Sign Language. The keyword in ASL is "American". Australia uses Auslan, France uses FSL, the UK uses BSL, a deaf friend of mine in Brazil uses a sign language called Libras, and the list goes on. There are over 300 sign languages around the world.
This is one of the reasons I have a strong distaste for the American deaf community, I have several but I won't get into multiple here in this video. American Deaf Communities rail against things like the trope and insult of "Deaf and Dumb", meanwhile, while being deaf, they say something incredibly dumb like insisting a deaf person can't be really deaf because they're not using their specific sign language. Sorry to break it to American deafs, but America does NOT encapsulate the entire world, and therefore the entire world doesn't use ASL. Hearing people got this concept down pat in that they realize perfectly well that not everyone in the world speaks English. Hell Hearing People even realize that not everyone in the United States of America speak English.
But if you're deaf, many in the American deaf communities insist you have to know and use ASL regardless of your culture or where you're from in the world or you simply just cannot be deaf. It's like the first dumb argument insisting you can't be deaf unless you're also feminist regardless of what audiologists say.
Stop making me look bad by being deaf and literally dumb. If you don't like the deaf and dumb trope and insult, then I can either take that you're not really deaf and you're just very dumb, or I take you at face value in that you're deaf and you're also dumb at the same time. Because insisting that everyone has to use ASL regulardless of region and culture or they're not deaf is just blitheringly stupid.
Note: This was intended to be a video topic I was going to cover, but I've decided instead to just post it as a blog post. This is the resulting script that would've been used in the video and subsequently the closed captioning.
