Comedy, like many forms of entertainment has evolved. From the chaplin esque slapstick to the war anecdotal (as an escape from the harsh realities of the times) to the rom com, to the acute situational (larry david, the office) and now leftwing political oozing pc nonsense (everywhere you bloody look).
There is some hope (as with any trend or fad) that we will move on past this, but there is also hope...though perhaps not so much...in the underground, counter media that currently parallels the pc com. As, like anything slightly hidden away, the underground so to speak, piques the publics interest. And names like Bill Burr gain an extra following...or maybe just a following to counter balance how they are hidden away by the popular publications for being so truthful. Though as we've seen in the case of count dankula, there can be pubishments, at least in the UK, for risque speech (or anything that doesn't fit under the p.c. umbrella). Though we did see a very impressive public rebellion against this in the form of marches and individuals across the globe putting themselves out there in protest of how ridiculous the charges were. But how many potential, young budding comedians would have been massively put off by all this negative media in the name of simply wanting to entertain? Sure, many cut their teeth in the right of passage heckle-taking and thus hone their trade.
But that is a form of attacking them based on how good their act is. Not attacking their persona purely based on their stance that may go against another culture...jibe at their or another gender or god forbid a (certain) religion.
I believe we need a movement to make it clear that we are not about to lose all the potential Tommy Coopers or Les Dawsons. I already curse not being born a couple of decades earlier just so I could have truly enjoyed these (in my opinion far superior than todays) entertainers. This movement, in my insane utopian vision, would have a verification of "unsafe space" on the door of every function room or venue hosting its free to say anything, liberal or conservative, comedy acts. The visits...as long as they could survive the initial fun hater protests...would far outperform other venues for comedy and would be the go to places for such events akin to the way "camra" is for lovers of beer. Let's open some "unsafe spaces".
