The Ghost Ship was an artistis illegal commune in Oakland, California, where at least 18 artists used the building as a place to work and there was an open space that acted as a party venue and for art performances.
Despite the building being a warehouse with no permits for people to live there it is believed many of the artists were also living in the warehouse making it unfit for living conditions. With its elaborate furniture and exhibits scattered throughout the building it is clear why a blaze would have spread so quickly and to have hampered the evacuation for so many.
"Multiple people warned Derick that it was a death trap, but he would laugh it off.'

A former friend of Almena revealed that on numerous occasions firefighters warned him that the warehouse was considered a death trap and unfit to be used as a professional venue, but he shrugged it off.

Almena has since deleted his Facebook post, but has yet to issue another statement regarding the lack of concern for his ignorance that cost 33 people their lives.
