There are elements of this book that I enjoyed, and elements I didn’t much care for. However, I don’t think I’m the target audience here. Most of my gripes stem from personal reading tastes, but let’s start with the positives.
Writing in this book is solid! @clcarhart writes with a voice that is easy to follow and it kept me going. Even though the story didn’t develop the way I wanted it to, at no point was I disengaged from the narrative. Another clear thing was that the author really cared for this story, which made a big difference.
As for the things that didn’t work for me, it mostly came down to character aspirations. Our heroine, Swanie, didn’t click with me, and I felt like too much attention was given to the mundane aspects of her life. Magic plays a huge role in this story but, for the most part, it’s a very passive role.
The series has potential and I recognize that many would enjoy it, though I wish this first book had been more eventful. Arcane Gateway was an okay read for me and I think I'd rate it a 3.5/5.
