This is the introduction to my series about Tech Sovereignty. The word "Sovereign" is taken from political terminology meaning:
2a : supreme power especially over a body politic
b : freedom from external control : autonomy
The word therefore describes the ability of some body to control itself, make laws for itself, decide what laws by which its members must abide, but is externally free. Thus a Sovereign State is externally free, but internally hierarchical.
A Nation can be considered a Sovereign Nation, a State can be considered a Sovereign State, A City can be considered a Sovereign City State. It is not often stated this way, but an individual can also be considered "Sovereign". This means that the individual is externally independent(or interdependent), he/she is treated as free individual, able to make his/her own choices, but internally hierarchical, they have discipline over the members of their own body: their brain, mind, body, behavior.
The Sovereign Individual does not need authorization from any larger body to act, either a State, or a corporation. If an individual wishes to make a contract with another Sovereign individual, State or corporation, they are perfectly able to do so, but this contract is bilateral. A bilateral contract means that each of the two parties of the contract are consenting to the contract, it is not forced upon them.
Note, quite frequently End User License Agreements(EULAs) effectively request the Sovereign individual to relinquish their Sovereignty. If you sign an EULA, it will often require signing over your rights to data and freedom of association. When this happens, an individual can hardly be considered to be Sovereign in practice, as the boundaries of life are completely determined by a State and corporate entities. Tech Sovereignty is about resisting this tendency in the world of Technology, to use Technology in ways that do not require you to sacrifice your personal freedom, privacy, security and your creative mind.
This series will introduce some ways that can help you take control of your own technology, without surrendering your Sovereignty to governments or corporations.
