Iconoclasm: a great deal of the art in English churches was defaced and destroyed by sectarian iconoclasts in the "Church reforms" of the 16th Century. This image is from St Margaret's Church, Cley-Next-the-Sea, Norfolk, one of many saints' images in that church whose faces have been viciously scratched out. Looking upon them is a very strange experience: the depth of the rage and the seeming joy in destruction, while inscrutable (to me at least) still feels very present and potent after all these centuries. So it goes. I suppose they could have just covered them up, but that would have allowed for the possibility of them being uncovered in the future. #art #iconoclasm #myphoto #minds
