This Rainbow Bee-eater (Merops ornatus) was hopping a few inches above the grass and spreading its wings. This action flushed many small insects out of the grass which the bird then darted about and ate. This is a ground-nesting species that digs a burrow about a metre long into the sand. I have studied this species for several years but have never witnessed this behaviour before or since. #birds #nature #Australia #myphoto
