I know this feeling first-hand. I was a straight-A student and learned quickly that being honest about my thoughts and feelings would lead to teachers feeling unnerved. It was only when I yes-manned them, smiled, and obeyed, that they wanted to dote on me with praise and good grades for participation. I saw this again from the other side as a teacher, and realized that the entire system of schooling is indeed fostering the next generation of dysfunctional people who hide their true thoughts and feelings so they can manipulate others for reward. The schooling system does not breed well-rounded people capable of expressing themselves effectively and vulnerably in working through conflict. Rather, it pushes children to swallow their discomfort, dismiss their hopes and their dreams, and push on for the sake of grades and praise via total obedience to the classroom mandates. Exit the sociopathic training ground. Exit school. Learn how at Alliance for Self-Directed Education: http://self-directed.org -THT #school #education #learning #teaching #unschool

I constantly brush up against this misapprehension. Self-directed education DOES NOT MEAN that young people are set loose without any sort of help, guidance, or direction. It simply means that children have a meaningful choice in their learning and that adults act as helpers, not judges. A child could even choose to take an organized class or use study materials in a robust academic fashion IF they choose it. There's nothing wrong with that as a choice. The root problem of compulsory schooling is that it forces all young people into a one-size-fits-all scheme and shames them if they ask if they can learn and explore differently. So, with that in mind, you can assure anyone asking this question that self-directed education does NOT mean "no guidance." It simply means "no coercion" in choice of learning topics. Exit the coercion. Exit school. Learn how at Alliance for Self-Directed Education: http://self-directed.org -THT #school #schooling #education #learning #teaching
