There are two main hypotheses as to why this engagement gap exists. (there are more but these tend to be the ones focused on) People associated with the left generally do not search for or share news. They either don't consume news, get news from their friends and word of mouth, or just watch mainstream channels. People associated with the right have few Television outlets for conservative content other than Fox news so they go online and search for news and share news. However the latter doesnt explain how FoxNews is the number one rated cable channel. This would lead us to the conclusion that people associated with the right are significantly more engaged in politics and news than the left. Not only is Fox News the highest rated channel, by some past reports the ratings for Fox News are more than CNN and MSNBC combined. As of 10/6 Fox news has more than Three times the primetime viewership of CNN and MSNBC Combined https://www.adweek.com/tvnewser/scoreboard-saturday-oct-6/380324 Combine this with FoxNews has the highest engaged conservative page, the 2nd highest engaged cable channel producer, and it seems that we could conclude conservatives are substantially more engaged with news and politics than the left.
