This Callistemon flower spike is painted in one of nature's most vivid reds. You can see the last few flowers emerging at the bottom of the spike. By not opening all the flowers at the same time the plant extends the window of opportunity for pollination. Once fertilized, the ovaries produce seeds which in some Callistemon species can persist (attached to the branches in their casings) in a viable state for many years. #flowers #Australia
