*excerpt: Police in Maine released a photo of the last time a woman was seen before she got into a car in New York City Monday morning - she's been missing since. Christine Hammontree, 29, was wearing a baggy, light blue shirt with a picture of a sun with a face on it, what looks like a Fitbit or Apple watch on her left wrist, an orange backpack and her hair in a bun. Police said she was wearing cut off light blue jeans and sandals, which can't be seen in the photo, which was taken surveillance footage inside a Times Square McDonald's. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9627977/Maine-woman-29-missing-getting-car-Times-Square.html

*excerpt: A Virginia elementary school teacher has been put on leave after telling the schoolboard he wouldn't affirm trans kids because it goes against his religion as a Christian. Byron Tanner Cross gave a speech at the Loudoun County school board meeting on Tuesday. He was arguing two policies that the public school board have put in place; one which forces teachers to use the pronouns a transgender child identified with, and one which allows transgender kids to take part in sports in the group of the gender they identify with. Cross said that the policies 'defile the holy image of God' and constitute child abuse. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9630279/Virginia-elementary-school-PE-teacher-leave-refusing-affirm-trans-gender-kids.html

*excerpt: A group of prison guards are under fire after apparently not noticing that a self-proclaimed "Satanist" and convicted killer beheaded and dissected his cellmate. On 9 March, 2019, Jaime Osuna, 31, killed, decapitated and dissected the body of his cellmate, Luis Romero, 44, with an improvised knife, according to reports from the state. The guards at Corcoran State Prison, where Osuna and Romero were incarcerated, reported after their rounds that both men were alive, even after the grisly murder took place. The death and subsequent failure of guards to report it have drawn calls for investigations into why Romero was placed in a cell with Osuna, who had a history of attacking his cellmates. A state report cited by The Los Angeles Times blamed the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for incompetence in its investigation and its delay in disciplining the guards. The reports about the murder do not contain information about why the guards did not find the body. According to a lawsuit filed by Romero's family, there was a white sheet over the cell's bars, which suggested the guards did not make a thorough search of the cell. The state's Department of Corrections rejected the report's findings and insisted that it had conducted a "thorough and complete investigation from the very beginning." However, a lawyer for Romero's family, Justin Sterling, said the department had a "veil of secrecy" it used to protect its officers from consequences. “The idea that my client had to sue in order to get basic questions answered about her son’s death is disheartening,” Mr Sterling said. Both men in the cell had histories of violent crimes. Romero had already spent 27 years in prison when he was transferred into Osuna's cell. He had been convicted of second-degree murder after shooting and killing a woman in Compton when he was a teenager. The shooting was associated with gang activity. Osuna was serving a life sentence for torturing and killing Yvette Pena, 37, at a motel in Bakersfield, California in 2011. The man – whose face is covered in tattoos including a Satanic pentagram – embraced his role as a villain, mocking the family of his victim during his trial and gleefully telling reporters that he loved torturing people. On the day of the murder, Osuna used a razor-blade to slice Romero, cutting out his eyes and chopping off one of his fingers before removing part of his ribs and slicing out his lung. After disfiguring and dissecting Romero, he cut off Romero's head, and sliced the man's face on either side of his mouth to make it seem as though the victim had a wide smile on his face. When guards eventually discovered the scene, they found Osuna wearing a necklace made of Romero's body parts. Osuna had never had a cellmate prior to Romero. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/satanist-beheaded-prison-cellmate-guards-b1855440.html

*excerpt: A man who had been on the run in rural New Zealand hired a helicopter to fly to a police station and surrender. James Bryant, who faces assault charges, spent five weeks apparently hiding in a small town in North Otago. He told local media his time there had been "great", but he was ready to leave "the middle of nowhere". Prisoners' advocate Arthur Taylor, who brokered the peaceful arrest, said he had taken Mr Bryant for champagne and oysters on their way to the station. Taylor, a high-profile former inmate who is currently on parole, told reporters outside Dunedin Central Police Station: "It was his first decent meal in weeks." The charges Mr Bryant is facing include assault with a weapon, wounding with intent to injure and three counts of posting harmful digital communications. Police had warned the public he was considered dangerous and should not be approached. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-57276336
