The Iris (kakitsubata) crest is depicted on both sides of this handmade sterling silver pendant. The designs are taken from traditional Japanese iris kamon. Irises were depicted on screen paintings and written about in poems in early Japan. The iris festival was held on the 5th day of the 5th month during the Heian period as it was believed that the sweet fragrance would drive away evil spirits. The iris was first used as a crest on carriages of court nobility and later as family crest in both the court and the military. The design is finished off with an iris leaf that ends in a folded loop Pendant made of Sterling Silver, with cold enamel (purple). 5.8 by 2.3 cm
