Bairro Alto

A dog watches the street from a window of a home in Bairro Alto, Lisbon. The azulejos, the painted tiles adorning the facade of the building and matching the dog’s colors, are part of the landscape in Portugal. Predominantly blue and ranging from purely geometric designs to religious scenes, landscapes, and vivid depictions of historic landmarks, the azulejos constitute a 500-year-old ornamental art form that crosses styles and languages.
