Remember the Sabbath
It would seem that for most people, even Christians, mentioning the Sabbath, elicits uncomprehending blank looks. The majority of people in our western world have forgotten what God told us to remember. There was a penalty for ancient Israel, God's people by covenant if they forgot God's law, but there were also great blessings for living in harmony with God's ways. But somehow many Christians think that they have a 'new covenant' that did away with the old one. Is this true? Or is there more to the story? You might consider the fact that Jesus said, ' live by every word of God' and 'For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or one stroke of a letter will pass away from the law until all things are accomplished.' As far as I can tell, Heaven and earth are still here, so the law about the Sabbath, that was observed by Jesus and his disciples, and the first century Christians, Jews and Gentiles, is still valid. Isaiah 58 If you stop trampling the Sabbath, stop doing whatever you want on my holy day, and consider the Sabbath a delight, sacred to the Lord, honoured, and honour it instead of doing things your way, seeking what you want and doing business as usual, then you will take delight in the Lord. I will let you ride on the heights of the earth; I will sustain you with the heritage of your ancestor Jacob. The mouth of the Lord has spoken. Isaiah 56 Thus says the Lord: “Keep justice, and do righteousness, For My salvation is about to come, And My righteousness to be revealed. 2 Blessed is the man who does this, And the son of man who lays hold on it; Who keeps from defiling the Sabbath, And keeps his hand from doing any evil.” 3 Do not let the son of the foreigner Who has joined himself to the Lord Speak, saying, “The Lord has utterly separated me from His people”; Nor let the eunuch say, “Here I am, a dry tree.” 4 For thus says the Lord: “To the eunuchs who keep My Sabbaths, And choose what pleases Me, And hold fast My covenant, 5 Even to them I will give in My house And within My walls a place and a name Better than that of sons and daughters; I will give [a]them an everlasting name That shall not be cut off. 6 “Also the sons of the foreigner Who join themselves to the Lord, to serve Him, And to love the name of the Lord, to be His servants— Everyone who keeps from defiling the Sabbath, And holds fast My covenant— 7 Even them I will bring to My holy mountain, And make them joyful in My house of prayer.
