The Chilean Milky Way

This magnificent photo was taken in from the Atacama Desert, Chile by photographer Carlos Eduardo Fairbairn. In the foreground is the falling edge of a caldera and above, the arch of our Milky Way galaxy. Near the top of the arch lies the constellation of the Southern Cross; the red-glowing Gum Nebula on the right; and to the left is the bright orange star Antares. Just above the horizon in between the two volcanoes you will see the Large Magellanic Cloud; the largest satellite galaxy in the Milky Way. ............................................................................ #earth #science #nature #photography #art
