Where does the EU waste go ? The EU is exporting more than 30 million tons of waste to other countries. Since 2004, it has increased by three quarters. Materials such as steel and iron make up the largest proportion, followed by paper and plastic. Almost half of it ends up in Turkey. The second largest destination is India, followed by the UK. Since 2004, waste exports have increased the most to Pakistan: rising from 0.1 to 1.4 tons of waste last year. No longer among the EU's top exporting countries is China. While more than 10 million tons of wast used to be exported there in 2009, just over half a million tons were exported recently. Part of the reason why EU waste exports to Turkey have increased was that China put a halt to EU plastic waste imports. On top of that , households in Turkey barely separate their waste. That's why Turkey imports sorted waste to produce reusable raw materials.
