Looking for something to read? Like noire, hardboiled detective stories? I'm not talking about the current sensitive, diverse, politically correct detectives - but the ones where the perp meets justice on the execution ground in Imperial China. If this sounds appealing, try out the Judge Dee series by Robert Van Gulik.
Van Gulik was a mid twentieth century scholar and diplomat and he brilliantly recreates the charm and color of medieval China. I've read all these many times but my ex made off with my collection when she left, so I have to buy most of them again - don't get the Kindle versions, you need the actual books.
I am always looking for great detective stories but I have found that the upcoming writers aren't capable of producing the quality one is used to from writers like Van Gulik, Raymond Chandler, Ross Macdonald, Martha Grimes, Tony Hillerman, Sue Grafton, etc. Publishers seem to be more concerned with diversity than quality writing these days.
If you've got any tips - I'd love to hear them.
