Arthur Rimbaud is one of the founders of modern poetry. He became famous in Paris in the 1870s. After making a big impact on the world of poetry in his teens he quit writing and became a vagabond in Europe, a deserter in Java and gun runner and explorer in Africa until his early death.
This poem speaks of his affair with the esteemed French poet Paul Verlaine, which ended in Verlaine shooting Rimbaud and going to jail.
Rimbaud was a major influence on Patti Smith, the musician.
