Hollyhocks sown on February 3rd started germinating yesterday. These are relatively cold tolerant so once they are up and running I’ll be able to move them out into the unheated greenhouse to grow on. I also have them started in a potting medium in larger six pack cells, so they will stay happy in those for quite some time. I am starting two varieties, “The Watchman”, which is a dark burgundy color, and “Nigra” which is a dramatic black color. Hollyhocks are a classic in cottage gardens and provide height and drama to the back of flower borders.
