Regarding GameStop and Robinhood, I think most of us are probably a combination of misinformed and under-informed. Stocks rush up, unwary investors get excited, they buy in... and then they lose all their savings. That's not a well-functioning capital market. Likely a big component of the surge in prices was also that Robinhood users were buying naked call options. I thought that was under-discussed in the news articles that I've read. If you buy a call option on that platform, Robinhood is a seller, and now needs to buy the underlying stock, which sends the stock up higher. And then the call option increases in value, so they need to buy even more stock to not take any risk. That's one way that things spiral out of control, in addition to short-seller hedge funds having to cover their margins by buying stock. I don't feel bad for short-seller hedge funds losing money, they should know better, or at least they do now. But I do feel bad for retailers who got lured into buying the stock when it was at its high and have now lost all their savings. In general short-sellers and hedge-funds can be good when they're acting on public information and not taking activist roles like breaking the bank of England (yeah, that's you soros).
