ever wonder why old memes are blurry?

the way i understand it is because .jpg files are a "lossy" file format. this means that the image loses data every time it is calculated, so older .jpg files will actually lose quality over time. the .jpg file format uses a process called interpolation to calculate the difference between different colors by basically equating the difference between them mathematically. this is different than the way data is stored in a .bmp (bitmap) file format. in a .bmp every bit of data is physically mapped out (hence the name Bit Map) so it is "lossless" because the file's integrity is maintained over time rather than just being roughly calculated when loaded. one of the main reasons .jpg files were created like this is so they can have a much smaller file size due to their being calculated/compressed/lossy. .jpeg stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group.
