As promised earlier today, here's another recent article of mine.
The background to this is simple. I got very cross last year with various statue-topplers and curriculum-decolonisers getting around the place in the wake of Black Lives Matter and so on, and I sent the lot of them up as high as a kite in several places, including the Spectator.
What I neglected to do, however, was model how one actually engages with a morally mixed past. So, in December, I decided to write a piece doing just that, on the Roman law of slavery (I am qualified in both classics and Roman law).
The past is a foreign country, they do things differently there.
