On this day 189 years ago, the eleven-day Christmas Rebellion began in Jamaica when up to 60,000 slaves revolted against the British Empire for their freedom. While facing brutal and bloody repression, hundreds of slaves were killed, and the leader of the Christmas revolt, a Jamaican Baptist preacher known as Sam Sharpe was amongst those executed in its aftermath. The rebellion played a major role in paving the way for freedom, and just two years later, the 1833 Slavery Abolition Act was passed, ending slavery in the British Empire.
