Neither Republicans nor Democrats had a firm stance on abortion once it became a big issue in the early 1970s. Most GOPers were okay with it because of their support of population control, while many Dems, JFK especially, were opposed to it due to religious (Roman Catholic) and social justice perspectives. Until the pro-life crowd got foisted on the GOP, it was a Democrat bastion which coexisted with anti-war, anti-racist, and anti-poverty activists. To this day, there is a leftist sense of social justice moralism embedded in the pro-life movement's DNA.

One of the worst things which Reagan did was bringing the Religious Right into the GOP fold. For all of the Religious Rightist muscle-flexing that the Zoomers brought back, seeing as American Christians (particularly ones under-30 including some Zoomers) are zooming leftward on social justice issues and voting accordingly, as well as the fact that less and less Americans are religious, where does the Religious Right stand in 10 years? Today, many of the Religious Rightists who adored Reagan are turning on Trump. Coincidence?
