Sitting beside the dropship pilots now were women coming from dozens of spacer clans, and while their sons, husbands, brothers and fathers were jumping in their interceptors’ cockpits, manning bridge stations, or counted supplies and equipment in the cargo holds of their modular spaceships, the prized navigators centered themselves. They would call for the aid of hyperspace, nay the Universe itself, and in this brooding hour reinforce the advantage of their kin – enabling blade, fist and beam to strike first and bring a less bloody victory.
