Octopuses - The 8-armed bandits of the sea

Found in every ocean on the globe, octopuses are some of the most fascinating creatures in the sea. Well known for their intelligence, their uncanny ability to blend into their surroundings, their unique style of locomotion, and their ability to squirt ink, these shell-less mollusks belong to a species of more than 300 members (none of which are endangered). Octopuses are equipped with three hearts; one that pumps blood through its body, and two that pump blood through the gills. These 8-armed bandits mostly stay along the ocean’s floor hunting for crabs, shrimps, and lobsters, though some can attack larger prey, such as sharks. As masters of escape and camouflage, when threatened, octopuses can shoot an inky fluid darkening the water and confusing its harasser. They can also change to gray, brown, pink, blue, or green to blend in with its surroundings. Octopuses are the only marine animals, apart from whales, seals, and sea lions, demonstrating primitive problem-solving and pattern recognition skills. ..................................................................................... #science #nature #animals #education #octopus
