If conservatism is a counterculture, it is a rather weak and ineffectual one. Conservatism's modus operandi is "let's get everyone around the table for a discussion". This doesn't work when your opposition are not reasonable people. Conservatives are the first to make concessions and the last to resort to harsh measures. They are always on defence and never on the offensive. Over time this had led to loss after loss for the conservative cause, as a survey of the history of conservatism shows.
“At this point, someone or other may well laugh, but this planet once moved for millions of years through the ether without human beings, and it may one day do so again, if men forget that they owe their higher existence, not to the ideas of a few crazy ideologues, but to the knowledge and ruthless application of Nature’s stern and rigid laws.” ~ Adolf Hitler
