If conservatism is a counterculture, it is a rather weak and ineffectual one. Conservatism's modus operandi is "let's get everyone around the table for a discussion". This doesn't work when your opposition are not reasonable people. Conservatives are the first to make concessions and the last to resort to harsh measures. They are always on defence and never on the offensive. Over time this had led to loss after loss for the conservative cause, as a survey of the history of conservatism shows.
