Volcanic lightning occurs in, or around, ash plumes during some volcanic eruptions. The lightning is often quite spectacular in its own right, and although most discharges are hidden by ash, visible cloud to ground discharges outside the ash plume can be especially brilliant. Such is the case in this spectacular photo taken by Sigurour Stefnisson of an eruption on the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull.
