Merry Christmas everybody, I hope you all have a good one... Julie Green took this photo of me in my apartment just before the King Dork Approximately book release party at 1234Go Records. This was pre-"balbum", just the book and theme song were out, but there was a surprise live set from the reformed MTX that night that was the start of being a band again including many shows and subsequently the balbum. I don't actually think it's Christmas, though I wouldn't put it past me to think something like that in this weird, mad time. In one's little hole, it might as well be Christmas every day and year round. One of the first stunts I pulled, long ago, when I first got my own show on KALX was to do a Christmas show in July, playing only Christmas songs and talking on mic as though I were under the impression that it was actually Christmas. This was done as a gag with the intention of riling and irritating the listeners (my usual gameplan on the radio) and rile then it did. The phone lines were solidly lit up with people in hysterics calling to yell and complain, what's the matter with this guy, it's not Christmas, this is psychotic, etc. For four hours. But not only was it successful at provoking a hysteric reaction from the audience. It turned out it was also actually, literally ILLEGAL to broadcast disinformation, e.g. the wrong date, over the airwaves. This FCC rule goes back a long ways, apparently: maybe it was Orson Welles related. Or maybe it wasn't really illegal and they just said that to get me to cut it out. Anyway, I got called into the office and read the riot act and was suspended etc. First of many such. Good times.
