So I scoured around looking for 'proper' games to play on my phone. One's that don't try to cheat me out of money I'd rather pay upfront, and games that are more like games on a console, or portable console. I did a bit of digging, so you don't have to.
I’ll be doing this wee list in two parts. The first is titles for Android, and the second is games for PSP (Which you can play with PPSSPP). PS excuse the screenshots, they are all zoomed in to 1:1 (they look better on the smartphone screen, trust me).
5. Yesterday
Yesterday is a creepy arse point and click puzzle game. It’s atmospheric, and the graphics are beautiful, although it’s a strictly non-casual affair. If you have the time, well worth the investment.
4. The Room 3
This one is a pure puzzler. It’s gorgeous, has a neat narrative and can be played fairly piecemeal. The room games are also pretty affordable.
3. Bully
A true Rockstar game in every sense. Run around, and master the schoolyard that acts a bit like a prison yard.
2. Never Alone: Ki edition
This is an attractive casual puzzle platformer, with a compelling traditional narrative. Something a bit special.
1. Hitman Go
Of all the Go games, I like this one the best. You have to kill everyone, strategically. It’s like chess but with murder, and it looks great. Also, like the Room games, usually cheap.
5. X-men legends 2
Probably the best action RPG on the PSP platform. No complicated controller combo’s, so easily translates to the touch screen. Control a team of X-men, and battle your way from room to room.
4. Tomb Raider: Legend
The original (real) Lara Croft, this mobile game manages to capture the essence of the Tomb Raider, climbing, jumping, puzzles and shooting. It'll challenge you. Some actions may be awkward with touchscreen unless you shift the buttons around the screen, so slightly better with a controller. Also one of the better looking games on PSP.
3. Silent hill origins
Creepy storytelling with simple controller mechanics. Not remotely casual though, you'll need some time investment. Very much Silent Hill.
2. Tekken: Dark Resurrection
Good looking, easy touch screen mechanics, and arguably one of the best fighting games on the PSP platform. Also, fairly challenging.
1. God of War: Chains of Olympus
There are some mechanics here with the controller that really favours an actual controller (like pressing L1, and R1 at the same time as running forward). But all the same, it’s a great looking game that plays amazingly on a smartphone. If you have a controller, this is a must. If you don’t, try Ridge Racer 2 instead, it's a lot of fun as a casual racer.
