ASK BETH: Speaking of LK 222 (Dr Frank - Show Business Is My Life, which to my astonishment is now 20 flippin years old), here's some trivia. "Ask Beth": who's this song about, I'm often asked. Or if someone named Beth comes up, the question will be, is that song about her? In fact, though, the subject of the song is a syndicated newspaper column by one Beth Winship that I read in the San Francisco Chronicle when I was growing up in the 70s. The column was called Ask Beth and it was kind of a Dear Abby for teens, and the questions were usually about sex, dating, drugs... all the Go Ask Alice type "youth issues" pretty much. Using it as the conceit for a song was a pretty good idea, and fortunately I did it well enough (I like to think) that it' still works even when you don't know about Beth Winship and her column, which, I have learned, most people these days do not. At worst, such dated references make the song in question incomprehensible and quite difficult to explain (e.,g. "Hello Kitty Menendez"); but at best it can be just cryptic "background" that you don't really need to know to get the song. Which is the case with "Ask Beth" because it's the relationship drama and its implied story that is in the forefront... there's an extra kick if you know he's telling her to write to teen sex advice column instead of asking him, but you don't need to know that. It wasn't some grand design here, I just got lucky. But it's a kind of songwriting lesson nonetheless. Here's the wikipedia page for Beth Winship: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Winship I wondered whether there'd be a "cultural references" section mentioning this song... but no such luck. As I said it's not generally known. But it should be there, don't you think? And lest you think it's way out of line to suggest that my songs should invade people's wikipedias, my song did manage to make into the E. R. Dodds page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._R._Dodds. Finally, as to the photo: this is a DAT, which is the sole extant copy of this recording, in any form. I found it in a boot a few years ago. Otherwise this record would be lost, for good. Life is strange. notes: -- discogs: https://www.discogs.com/Dr-Frank-Show-Business-Is-My-Life/release/2147054 -- Dr Frank - "Ask Beth": https://youtu.be/nbZQcwSdqvc -- I looked around to see if anyone else had done an "Ask Beth" and found this: https://youtu.be/uAfV6Mpm9eQ #music #songs #nostalgia #sex #minds

“It was 20 years ago today…” On this day in 1999, Dr. Frank’s (@frankportman) debut solo album, Show Business Is My Life, was released. What’s your favorite song from it? I actually didn’t know about this album until around Day 100. You’d think I’d jump all over it, but the truth is, I liked knowing there was a full album of Dr. Frank songs I haven’t heard yet, ready to be played at a moment when I truly “needed it”, when I was in such a state that only new Dr. Frank songs could cheer me up. That moment finally came one sad, lonely November night. Popped on my headphones, pressed play, and I know this is super cliché, but I really did laugh, and I really did cry. Those thirteen little songs were just what I needed to keep me going. Music is powerful! Anyone who has seen Dr. Frank play a solo show recently will have noticed he has written tons of great new songs in these last 20 years. Let’s hope he gets those all recorded sometime soon and churns out yet another classic! For today, this one’s on repeat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tN0honWRugA&list=PLhRv9DgknqYldYYx1RqFjYAJP16wC1wbG

"One anecdote relates a story of Zita giving her own food or that of her master to the poor. On one morning, Zita left her chore of baking bread to tend to someone in need. Some of the other servants made sure the Fatinelli family was aware of what happened; when they went to investigate, they claimed to have found angels in the Fatinelli kitchen, baking the bread for her." #romancalendar #zita #lucca #domesticservice #minds
