Syverenians

The Syverenians are the peoples of the North East of Amythro. They are humans, but legend has it that their ancestors interbred with the Giants of the Northern Mountains. Their complexion is as grey as stone, their hair dark as pitch, and their eyes red as the autumn leaves. An average man stands a staggering seven foot tall, and chest has a circumference of five feet. They are strong, proud, and industrious.

Their domain reaches throughout the regions of Thanativoreisk, Anecrovni, Axenia, Prexia, and Astrovnia. They are, generally, at peace with their own kind throughout the regions, but have still been known to squabble over the riches mined in the mountains.

As can be seen by the names of their regions, the language of the regions mix further and further with the language of the Doiketians. This is largely due to their willingness to mix with other peoples, and the language of the Doiketians had become the common language amongst all peoples of Amythro. Only Thanativoreisk, due entirely to its isolating location, still speaks the ancient tongue in its purest form. Axenia, though entirely accessible, has also kept a relatively pure form of the language due to their Traditionalist culture. Astrovnia, by contrast, has almost entirely discarded their native tongue in favor of the common language.

Slavery is viewed as transitory. Syverenians do not take those of their own race as slaves, but all slaves are encouraged to assimilate and become citizens. Typically a slave is from the southern or western regions of Amythro, and is taken as a prisoner of war. Upon arrival, they are taught the customs, practices, and work that is performed within their captor's settlement or nomadic tribe. At the change of every season, the slaves are asked if they would join those taking the pilgrimage to the monasteries. Should the slave make the pilgrimage, and offer the appropriate sacrifices, they become an official citizen and equal to their former masters. All the necessary commodities for survival are given to them, and they are expected to then contribute to the society in which they are now citizens.

Bears, deer, and goats all play a central role within their society. A man is not a man until he and his bear fight and kill the fierce mountain tigers whose taste for human flesh is unequaled. Their history is that of miners and herdsmen. Those who have remained within the nomadic life primarily herd the deer and goats, and only eat of their flesh and milk.

Even though their traditional culture is that of nomadic herdsmen, some have chosen to create settlements either along the coasts or nearest to mineral veins on the outskirts of the mountains. The city dwellers have perfected the arts of metalworking, jewelry making, and woodworking.

There is a deep respect between the nomadic tribes and those who have chosen to establish permanent settlements. Both recognize that their society cannot exist properly without the other. The herdsmen provide the vast majority of the food for the cities, while the cities provide the weapons, military training, and various industrial goods. All legal matters are settled within the settlements to which the nomads are vaguely attached. Should nomads attached to different settlements have a dispute, the matters are taken to the capital of the given region.

Syverenians are a deeply pious people. Monasteries dot the fringes of the mountain ranges, and it is not uncommon for girls to be sent off to a monastery prior to puberty, and return to the tribe or city when she is ready to be married. As such, most of the monasteries are female, but there are some male monasteries as well. Each monastery only allows visitors of the same sex as the inhabitants.
