Why you shouldn't panic about the corona virus

I like many others have been following the corona virus pretty closely lately, and have seen quite a few people panicking about it while others seem to be less concerned than they should be. First, as the title says, do not panic. In general panic is never a good thing for anyone whether it be the person panicking or the people on the receiving end of that panic. With that in mind let's go over why the corona virus is something you shouldn't panic about, but still take seriously.

1. The virus has a 2 - 20% CFR (Case Fatality Rate) based on different measuring methods, where you look, and the quality and timing of your treatment. This is further mitigated by age health and other factors, and for the parents out there the good news so far is that there has not been a single case that has killed someone under the age of 9. So you have a fighting chance of survival.

Correction: There have been possible fatalities of children 9 and under in China, this is unconfirmed, and we do not know if this is due to the virus or lack of care on their parents or guardians behalf, but this needs to be reported none the less. Thank you to @davemind for this information.

2. The virus can spread a variety of ways but I will split it into 2 groups Officially Confirmed and Unofficially Confirmed. Officially it has been confirmed to spread the same ways as the flu, however this is at a much higher rate than the flu, so be vigilant, wash your hands cough in your elbow, yada yada. Unofficially it has been confirmed to spread via feces, and gas from feces up to 200 meters away, so my recommendation is to avoid public restrooms.

3. Symptoms are unfortunately the scariest part of this, sometime during the incubation period a person becomes infectious, afterward they will develop flu like symptoms including respiratory problems, (coughing and sneezing) and diarrhea and a fever will emerge, in serious cases this fever can increase dramatically (watch the Iranian health minister video for example) they will almost certainly have pneumonia and some may have seizures. So if your temperature keeps increasing call the hospital before things get out of hand.

 4. The bad news comes down to treatment, there is no cure, and it looks to be at least a year before one can be made. There are treatments, but from what I have seen they are basically throwing everything they can at it and seeing what sticks.

5. Prepping for isolation is still very possible, you can stock up on medicine, non-perishable food, and water, and entertainment and hole your self up indoors until this blows over if that is an option for you.

6. Panic helps no one, not you, not the people around you. Use your head and calmly figure out what you need to make it through this, prepare for the worst and hope for the best and you will come out of this fine. It's not the end of the world.
