Plenty of parts to be machined still, but it is going well so far. This run I've been working on parts for the spindle assembly.
Found a perfect sized piece in the scrap bin, and began turning it to size to fit on the spindle shaft
Boring bar shot, almost to-size
Threading tool to put internal threads on. Took a few passes because I wanted a fairly tight fit
Test-fit against the spindle shaft looks good :-)
Internal shot of the finished threads
Now I have the threads done, but the spindle nuts definitely do not look very nut-like. Time to add some flats so you can get a wrench around it
Halfway finished machining the flats. 8 flats seemed about right for a piece of this size
Now to split them in two so I have both spindle nuts (one for each lathe headstock)
A little sanding and filing and this is what they look like. Total time to build was a couplefew hours total
As long as I had everything spooled up I figured I'd make two bearing retaining rings. I'll probably end up brazing them to the lathe so they stay secured
And off they go onto the parts pile.
Also went and machined threads onto the GT2 pulleys to match the shaft I made earlier.
Well that's another pile of parts done. Hopefully next post will be assembling the first half of the lathe and attaching the stepper motors.
Hope you enjoyed 🤠
