GMRS Radio

General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is a licensed radio service that covers the applicant and immediate family for one fee. GMRS does not require an exam like Amateur (Ham) Radio. With GMRS, your family can keep in touch via simplex and repeater communications. GMRS is a simpler way to have emergency communications. https://www.fcc.gov/general-mobile-radio-service-gmrs #gmrs #radio

Since my last post, another radio operator and I shared the cost to set up a GMRS repeater at the local fire station. We set up http://missiongmrs.org for the community.

The local GMRS repeater has been down for over a week. There is no telling how long it will be offline. I haven’t the means to set up my own repeater. Otherwise, I might set up a pirate repeater at work. It’s handy to be able to extend one’s range across town. Alternatively, I might need to get more powerful radios. Alternatively, I’m studying for my ham license. Those are alternative repeaters for calling help in an emergency.

Last night we had some heavy storms. My GMRS radio was good for talking to other operators.

I am starting this GMRS Radio group because there is enough of a difference between GMRS and Amateur Radio that it merits its own separate space. Technically, there is little difference between a GMRS radio and other radios. However, many of the decisions and considerations that...See more
