I shared this:

It's true. No fake news here.

First comment from UserA:

Actually they argued over that concept. Do a little more research.

My response:

Dialog and discussion is always present. Where we landed was a Constitutional Republic and for good cause. A Democracy by definition differs little from that of a Monarchy... One you are a ruled by one whereas the other you are ruled by many. In neither case is the minority represented effectively. I will offer the same response I give all... Bring your sources to bear... Not just the simple response of "your wrong".

UserA response:

Well here is a source that will support my position. Try reading the book "The Vineyard of Liberty 1787-1863 (The American Experiment)". You will then learn that George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, etc. all had different ideas about how our government should be formed. In fact, some thought the Constitution should be such that it would keep the "rabble" (meaning illiterate rural folk) from electing a someone as President who was morally corrupt. George Washington & Alexander Hamilton wanted a strong central government. Thomas Jefferson disagreed & thought each state should have strong governments. This particular book would lend a lot to your discourse. If you would like to know other sources I would be glad to provide them to you. But this particular book shows the evolution of how & why we have the government we do.

My response:

Cool... I will check them out. Thanks for sharing that.

Honestly I would have hoped that they laid the discussion on the table for all to see. Considering the importance I would expect nothing less.

A mix of reading original text plus historical reviews makes for a good mix.

Reading through both the Federalist and the Anti-Federalist Papers also sheds light on the opinions of the Founding Fathers. In the end, irrespective of the individual positions, they collectively decided and agreed upon a Constitutional Republic as the optimal solution for this Nation to be founded upon.

Speaking of history, we must also understand that the United States Constitution finds its influences going back to the five British Charters and we can bear witness to that as we read the Constitution and compare to the Charters.

1. Charter of Liberties 1100 ( http://www.nhinet.org/ccs/docs.htm )

2. Magna Carta of 1215 ( http://www.nhinet.org/ccs/docs.htm )

3. Petition of Right 1628 ( http://www.nhinet.org/ccs/docs.htm )

4. Grand Remonstrance 1641( http://www.historyguide.org/earlymod/remonstrance.html )

5. English Bill of Rights 1689 ( http://www.nhinet.org/ccs/docs.htm )

It should be noted that at no time have I stated that there wasn't disagreement but it is true what they finally agreed to. Which makes me curious what your argument was to that which you found objectionable.

UserA responded:

Your comments are condescending. How's that for some brutal honesty? By the way did you know it was Alexander Hamilton' who pushed the British influence. Strange because he was really not very well liked by the southern states.

To recall where this started...

"do a little more research" was a presumption that I have not done so myself . The grand majority of my posts are generally public in nature and not limited to just friends. That of course invites potential public discourse. I accept that...even if it is family. Engagement with family on topics of politics and religion is cautionary territory but not off limits by any stretch.

I appreciate the addition to my research material and in return shared mine. There was not an underlying motive to suggest you were wrong. In fact I agreed as much that they did not agree on the onset. They did however agree to the final terms.

I respect that you are a vocal activist with regards to politics. I wish more were. However to suggest those who do not agree with you are wrong is shortsighted at best.

I do my best to look at multiple sources and media outlets including authors. Few are actually without bias and there lies another caution that we must be aware of.

All are welcome to reply... family or otherwise but we do so willingly and accept what comes with that participation.

UserA responded:

I just think arguments about whether our country is a democracy or a republic is rather silly. It distracts from what is really happening to our country under the leadership of an infantile president. I would much prefer to see some hard evidence that what has happened over the last two years will in fact make our country better in the long term not just the short term to make a narcissist feel good about himself. That being said... I am done.

....UserA walks away victoriously.

What did I learn from this social media exchange... my Mother trolled me and hijacked my thread to pontificate about her dissatisfaction with the current POTUS and Administration, more specifically President Trump. She had no real interest in the discussion or merits of a Constitutional Republic over a Democracy.

- Thank you

P.S. I would be interested in hearing from others about this exchange.
