Commonly known as the Lily of the Nile. The banner pic is an aggie bloom just opening like something from the move "Alien". I put a couple of these in my back garden last year somewhat as an experiment. I wasn't sure of the amount of sun in the location, or the soil type, or it they like rocks as mulch. This may bore lots of folks, but I like when I put something in and it works. If you do any gardening or growing, you know not all things work. For the record, I live in US hardiness zone 9.
Seems they don't mind any of it. So I shall add 8 or 10 more this fall and make a good cluster. I am watching the blooming closely this year. Not sure how long one big bloom will last. But here are pics of the above bloom over the last few weeks. I can say the bees love this thing and especially love the Texas sage growing a few feet away.
The bloom this past weekend is almost 1 foot in diameter.
It's little brother is trying to catch up below. No rhyme or reason, but the other plant's bloom is about 3 weeks behind the big one.
Does anyone know just how many blooms can come from one Aggie plant? And her is a pic of the aforementioned Texas sage. Great, hardy plant that busts out with tons of little flowers as the humidity rises. Very much a bee lure!
