A tiling Window Manager is simply a traditional Window Manager that arranges your windows alongside one another split either vertically or horizontally. Most tiling WMs also allow the user to group similar windows by "tags" or "workspaces" - this way, you can have a web browser tag, work tag, etc. Tiling WMS also usually include a traditional "floating" layer (which works similar to traditional desktops).
Some common tiling WMs include:
- i3/sway (includes a "tabbed" layout)
- awesome
- xmonad
- dwm
- bspwm
- amethyst (Mac OSx tiling WM)
Users of a non-open source OS such as MacOSX or Windows can also simulate a tiling WM with the use of external programs.
I encourage you to try out a Tiling WM - you might find it increases your productivity and ends up being more comfortable in the end!
