I often ponder why the political state of the U.S. is so broken. You may disagree and say it isn't broken, but what really gets accomplished in DC these days, aside from endless massive spending bills? With each side just fighting about what expense will push us further down that hole.
The division between Republicans and Democrats today is likely as great as it has been since at least the Great Depression, and likely going back prior to then. There seems to be a great void as they move outward on the political spectrum. At least that is the outward public posturing done by most members of both parties. They likely hit the K Street pub crawl after the cameras are off and laugh together at our expense while the tab is picked up by the Lobby Group of the Day.
I do believe in the graphic above being graphically correct. Both have gotten so bloated and so powerful, that the teeter totter representing the political spectrum as a line has broken. Thus preventing either from moving back to the center.
But that is the case if one views the political spectrum as a line. So if one goes in either direction, they will forever be on that side of the spectrum. No hope of getting to the middle of anything, and no logical discourse with anyone on the other side.
But is the political spectrum truly a line? I don't believe so. I believe this image better describes the spectrum.
So in that representation, one can see that anything between 3 and 9 o'clock on the circle basically will mean the public is basically screwed. Keep in mind that is if the folks in power fall into that part of the spectrum. This is because if our leaders are in that realm of the spectrum, we the people have the least control of our own destiny. I do believe the Democratic and Republican parties in the US - at least outwardly - have fallen into that realm. If each continue down that path, are we going to be voting for either Communists or Fascists? And wondering which is better?
I certainly hope not. But with the state of politics in our country becoming a version of American Royals, with Congress members seemingly "born to it", who knows. I wished I had the answer, aside from my standard practice of trying to vote for 3rd parties and against incumbents. I do wish we had viable multiple parties, so at least parties that lean left or right would have to compromise and deal with others on their side of the circle. As it exist today, they aren't even required to do such.
Maybe I am wishing for something on a train which is already left the station. Again, I don't profess a solid answer. The best label I can put on US politics is "disappointing". How did it get to this point? I'm a just being defeatist? I really don't believe I am, as I tend to be a positive minded person the vast majority of the time.
Only time will tell I suppose. What are your thoughts?
