About a month ago I posted a short couple of paragraphs about playing Fortnite. At the time I was still rather inexperienced with the game and it's mechanics. Now a month later I have a bit more to say about the game. For the purpose of this review I have to mention that I am playing with a standard controller on a PS4 pro. I have also been playing solo and squads mostly in battle royal mode as I don't have the story mode which I'll do a review on when it is available to all players.
I'm going to start with the sound effects and music. The game lacks music for the most part as it seems to be mostly saved for menus before matches and your trip to the battle field aboard the battle bus. What is there is decent but it won't set the world on fire, it does what it needs to and that's about it. Where the game shines a bit is in the sound effects department. The sound effects tell the story here as the guns have a large range of sounds that sound powerful without going over the top. Other effects like encroaching footsteps and warnings are well done and give you a fighting chance.
Graphics in this game are on the cartoon side of things and it works well for this type of game world. If I have to complain about anything it's the large amount of pop up and pop in. Entire trees and buildings can just pop out of nowhere causing a slight bit of tension. Luckily it tends to pop far enough out that it doesn't mess too much with your routes and attacks. I also have to give credit for the imaginative skins they came up with especially the new Raven skin.
As for the game play elements it is about the same as you'd expect from a FPS/TPS run, jump, and shoot. It all responds quickly and fluidly. The aiming is decent though I've experienced better; I am however playing mostly with default settings. I do feel sometimes that enemies hit me unfairly but that may have to do with a lag spike. Players do have a wide range of movements though it would be nice if people would stop jumping so much...
Which leads me to player interactions. With the PS4 you have multiple options as you can start your own chat on the PS4, use the in game chat or barring that the use of emoticons. Most interactions are of course shooting each other but in squads you do have the chance to revive downed players as long as their downed HP remains. My experience with squads has been mostly positive and with my own personal group have gotten multiple top 5 finishes though #1 still eludes me; the same for solo modes often finishing in the top 25.
Overall, I am enjoying the game and the aforementioned long waits have been a lot better. The island your on stays the same but the random placement of chests and items among other random elements keep the game from getting too stale. Various quests and missions also help keep play fresh by making you explore various locations and employ strategies needed to win. I still need more time to make use of the building system as I woefully underutilized it but with the right squad can turn the tide. For a free download this game has impressed me enough to recommend to anyone looking for something to play without breaking the bank though... that option is available too through the in game store.
